There are also good shopping options available in Egmond and surrounding area. There are a lot of small shops which have long opening hours with some even open on Sundays. Every Thursday morning there is a weekly market in Egmond aan Zee. Egmond aan den Hoef was formerly the home of the Count of Egmond. The ruins of the moated castle are very worth seeing. In Egmond Binnen particularly the abbey with candle manufactory and pottery as well as the church with wall paintings are worth seeing. Also there are a number of events organised in the music pavilion.
Trips around Egmond
Nice towns in the neighbourhood of Egmond are Bergen and Alkmaar but also Amsterdam and Haarlem are just 50 minutes away by car. In Bergen aan Zee there is a lovely sea aquarium – a worthwhile trip even if it rains. Every Friday the famous traditional cheese market takes place in Alkmaar where massive cheese wheels are stacked, sold and in breathtaking speed loaded at the market place. Who wants to witness this spectacle must get up very early and best come by bicycle as there are always a lot of visitors. But even without the cheese Alkmaar has its lure. Equally enticing is a boat trip across the tight canals or shopping tour through the numerous streets. Also the cheese museum as well as some historic patrician houses and romantic drawbridges are worth seeing. Only 30 minutes from Egmond in Zaandam one will come across the Zaanse Schans district. Here you can visit a windmill in full operation. Furthermore there are countless traditional houses with craftsman’s establishments and shops that take you back to the Netherlands of the 18th century. If you would like to do something relaxing on the return journey and are driving past Arnhem then you could visit Burgers Zoo. Here many animals are housed in enclosures that recreate a natural habitat. Plants and animals that get along with another are placed together – a very special zoo.
