Rent a holiday home in beautiful Northern Savonia
Located in eastern Finland, Northern Savonia rewards hikers, canoeists, and fishermen with its breathtaking landscape. The local dialect is Savo but most of the region's younger inhabitants speak English, German and Russian. The vast expanses of this sparsely populated region make it the ideal destination in which to rent a holiday house or holiday home in locations such as Tuusniemi and Maaninka.
The culture of Northern Savonia's cities
Founded under Swedish rule, Kuopio is Northern Savonia's principal city. Surrounded on three sides by lakes including Finland's largest lake, Lake Saimaa, this quaint city is populated with holiday apartments, holiday rentals and holiday houses. The Kuopio Market Place is a great way to sample the local culture and fresh produce, while the revolving restaurant atop Kuopio's Puijo Tower offers a unique dining experience. Kuopio's attractions include the Old Kuopio Museum, the Victor Barsokevitsch Photographic Centre and the Orthodox Church Museum of Finland. The city of Varkaus is popular for the historic Stora Enso Pulp Mill, the Taipale Canal and the Mekaanisen Musiikin Museo, the only mechanical music museum in Finland, while Iisalmi, another of the region's cities, is known for its beer museum, Olvi - Panimomuseo, and the Iisalmi Wooden Church. During the summer Northern Savonia is abuzz with international music, dance and wine festivals. Make sure you try the mouth watering Savo speciality, kalakukko (fish pie) as well as kotikalja, a homemade non-alcoholic ale. Strawberry lovers shouldn't miss the oldest summer festival in Finland, the Suonenjoki Strawberry Carnival.
Experience the natural wonders of Finland
Northern Savonia attracts travellers with its natural beauty and rustic holiday house options. Kuopio's three ski centres in Tahko, Kasurila and Puijo are recommended for winter sports as well as offering watersports like sailing, wind surfing, jet skiing and water skiing. The Orinoro Gorge in Leppävirta is an adventurous hiking trail which leads into a narrow gorge with vertical cliffs, while Leppävirta's spa is a good way to destress when you book a holiday rental or holiday home.
