Holiday Home adventure in Venice

When you stay in a holiday home you become part of the fabric of Venice, this once influential city which exuded wealth and power and made sure everyone knew it, from the fine palazzos along the Grand Canal to the magnificent churches and the famous lion of St. Mark.

Holidaying on water

Scenic gondola rides – try traghettos for shorter hops – are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the canals and bridges of Venice. Museums offer little information on these fascinating sites, so before you go, read about bridges and the battles of the fists that were fought upon them, about drowned heretics and spies, and of the merchants huddled round on the Rialto Bridge. In the evening, listen out for the gondolier's enchanting songs before relaxing in your holiday apartment.

Holidaying on land

Insights into politics, religion, music, and everyday life can be found across the city. See the powerful political chambers within the Doge's Palace, the iconic St. Mark's Square where risky "Flights of the Angels" were performed, and the Ca' Rezzonico palace furnished as it would have been in the seventeenth century. Fans of Vivaldi can see La Pietá, while those of Shakespeare may wish to brush up on The Merchant of Venice to help capture the fascinating buzz of life in the Jewish Ghetto. For a magical view of Venice and the lagoon on the Adriatic Sea, hop on a ferry and climb the tower of San Giorgio Maggiore before relaxing in your holiday home – see if you can spot your flat and the places you have visited.

Excursions from your holiday apartment

Venice controlled much of Northern I taly , also known as the Veneto, so look out for the lion of St. Mark in the charming cities of Padua and Verona. Ferry over to colourful Burano or make a fitting lion in the sands of the Lido out in the Venetian Lagoon.

“Venedig hat sich in den letzten Jahren nicht wirklich verbessert. Auch in der Vorsaison viel zu viele Tagestouristen, die Strassen verstopfen. Abseits der Touristenströme finden sich jedoch viele ruhigere, interessante Orte, Kunst und Kultur. Nach wie vor gute Restaurants, Osterias und Bars mit netten Menschen.”

“This was the fourth trip to Venice for my wife and me over the years. This was the first time for us to be here near Christmas. There was a fog one evening, which getting off the beaten paths to the small streets, made for an other worldly experience we'll never forget. It can seem like the town is run by tourists when it's busy, but there is no other place or experience like it.”
